About Serengeti National Park
Located in northern Tanzania, Lake Manyara National Park is a hidden gem of the Tanzania safari circuit, offering a unique combination of wildlife, landscapes, and birdlife within a compact area of just 330 km². The park is famous for its tree-climbing lions, large herds of elephants, and thousands of flamingos gathering along the shores of the alkaline lake.
During a Lake Manyara safari, visitors can explore a remarkable variety of habitats, from lush groundwater forests at the base of the Great Rift Valley escarpment to acacia woodlands, open grasslands, and the seasonal soda lake that covers much of the park. This diverse ecosystem supports a wide range of wildlife, including giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, hippos, monkeys, and more than 400 bird species.
Often included in Tanzania Northern Circuit safari itineraries, Lake Manyara National Park offers a beautiful introduction to Tanzania’s wildlife and natural landscapes, making it an ideal destination for a day safari or as part of a longer Serengeti and Ngorongoro safari adventure.
Location
At the base of the Great Rift Valley escarpment, about 126 km southwest of Arusha. Gateway to the northern safari circuit.
Best Time to Visit
July–December for tree-climbing lions and large mammal viewing. November–June for best birding and flamingo congregations.
How to Reach
A 1.5–2 hour drive from Arusha on tarmac roads. Lake Manyara airstrip serves charter flights. Often the first stop on northern circuit safaris.
