About Elizabeth National Park
Queen Elizabeth National Park is one of Uganda’s best places for a classic safari. In western Uganda, the park covers 1,978 km² and brings together wide savannah plains, forests, crater lakes, wetlands, and the famous Kazinga Channel.
On a private safari, you can expect to see elephants, buffaloes, hippos, lions, and many other animals. The Ishasha sector in the southern part of the park is especially known for its tree-climbing lions, which are one of the highlights of visiting Queen Elizabeth.
A boat safari along the Kazinga Channel is another experience worth adding to your visit. The channel is home to large numbers of hippos and attracts elephants, buffaloes, crocodiles, and many waterbirds. It is a relaxed way to see wildlife from a different perspective and enjoy the scenery around the park.
Location
Queen Elizabeth National Park is located in western Uganda, between Lake George and Lake Edward, bordering the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Best Time to Visit
The dry seasons (June–September and December–February) offer the best conditions for game drives, boat cruises, and wildlife viewing.
How to Reach
Domestic flight from Entebbe to Kasese airstrip (1 hour) or Mweya airstrip. Overland from Kampala is 5–6 hours via Fort Portal or Mbarara.
The Great Migration
The migration follows a clockwise route: calving in the southern plains (Jan–Mar), moving northwest toward Grumeti River (May–Jul), crossing the Mara River into Kenya (Jul–Oct), and returning south (Nov–Dec).
