About Murchison Falls National Park
Located in northern Uganda, Murchison Falls National Park is the country’s largest protected area, covering 3,840 km² of open savannah, riverine forests, and woodland. The park is named after the spectacular Murchison Falls, where the mighty Nile River forces its way through a narrow 7-meter gorge, creating one of Africa’s most powerful waterfalls.
The park offers some of Uganda’s best wildlife experiences. Game drives across the northern banks reveal elephants, giraffes, lions, buffaloes, and Uganda kob, while boat safaris along the Nile provide unforgettable encounters with huge Nile crocodiles, hippos, and an incredible variety of birdlife.
Location
Murchison Falls National Park is located in northwestern Uganda, where the Victoria Nile flows through the park toward Lake Albert.
Best Time to Visit
The best time for a Murchison Falls safari is during the dry seasons from June to September and December to February, when wildlife gathers around water sources and roads are easier to navigate.
How to Reach
The park is approximately a 5–6 hour drive from Kampala. It can also be reached by domestic flights from Entebbe to nearby airstrips, followed by a short transfer to your lodge.
The Great Migration
The migration follows a clockwise route: calving in the southern plains (Jan–Mar), moving northwest toward Grumeti River (May–Jul), crossing the Mara River into Kenya (Jul–Oct), and returning south (Nov–Dec).
