Tanzania Mandatory Travel Insurance 2026: What Every Traveller Needs to Know
From 1 October 2026, eligible foreign visitors entering Mainland Tanzania will be required to have mandatory inbound travel insurance.
Planning a Tanzania safari, Kilimanjaro climb, cultural tour, or Zanzibar holiday? There is now one more important travel requirement to know before your trip.
The new Tanzania inbound travel insurance is designed to provide emergency support to foreign visitors during their stay. The standard Mainland Tanzania policy costs the Tanzanian shilling equivalent of USD 44 and is valid for up to 92 days.
The good news is that arranging it is straightforward, and when you book your trip with us, we can help you through the process before you travel.
What Is Tanzania Inbound Travel Insurance?
Tanzania inbound travel insurance is a required insurance cover for eligible foreign visitors entering Mainland Tanzania by air, land, or sea. The requirement starts on 1 October 2026 under Tanzania’s new inbound travel insurance regulations.
The insurance is meant to provide emergency assistance while you are in Tanzania. The Mainland policy includes protection for matters such as:
- Emergency medical expenses
- Emergency medical evacuation
- Repatriation
The exact benefits, limits and exclusions are set out in the insurance policy terms and conditions.
Why Has Tanzania Introduced This Requirement?
The main reason is to make sure eligible foreign visitors have access to a standard form of emergency assistance while travelling in Tanzania.
A safari can take you far from major towns and hospitals. You may be travelling through the Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire National Park, Nyerere, Ruaha or other remote areas, so having emergency arrangements in place is an important part of safe travel.
The new rules create a clear insurance requirement for visitors and provide cover for important emergencies during a stay of up to 92 days. This does not replace your normal international travel insurance. We still recommend having comprehensive travel insurance that can cover other parts of your trip, such as cancellation, interruption, personal belongings and other risks that may not be included in the mandatory inbound policy.
How Much Does Tanzania Inbound Insurance Cost?
For Mainland Tanzania, the standard premium is the Tanzanian shilling equivalent of USD 44 per person.
The policy is valid for up to 92 days and can allow multiple entries during the period shown on the insurance certificate, subject to the policy conditions. The price and benefits may be different for specific categories of travellers, so it is always best to check the official insurance information before travelling.
Who Needs Tanzania Inbound Travel Insurance?
The Mainland Tanzania requirement applies to eligible foreign visitors entering through:
Airports
Land border crossings
Seaports
NIC currently states that residents of EAC and SADC member states are exempt from its Mainland mandatory inbound insurance requirement, along with other categories specified under the applicable rules and guidance. Travellers should check the current official information according to their nationality and residence status.
Where Should I Buy the Insurance?
For visitors entering Mainland Tanzania, the official online insurance platform is operated by the National Insurance Corporation of Tanzania (NIC).

NIC advises eligible travellers to obtain the insurance before arrival and keep their insurance certificate available because proof of cover may be requested during entry procedures.
For visitors entering Zanzibar, the designated insurance provider is the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation (ZIC).
Official ZIC Inbound Travel Insurance

ZIC also provides mandatory inbound travel insurance for visitors entering Zanzibar. Its current information states that the policy can cover a trip for up to 92 days, subject to the policy terms.
Mainland Tanzania or Zanzibar: Which Insurance Do I Need?
This is especially important for travellers planning a Tanzania safari and Zanzibar beach holiday. Your first international point of entry helps determine which inbound insurance you should arrange.
If you enter Mainland Tanzania first
For example: Kilimanjaro Airport → Serengeti → Ngorongoro → Zanzibar
You enter Mainland Tanzania first, so you should arrange the NIC inbound travel insurance.
If you later continue to Zanzibar, the current implementation guidance states that you do not need to buy a second inbound policy simply because you are travelling between Mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar. Emergency services are handled through the provider from which your inbound policy was obtained, subject to the policy terms and conditions.
If you enter Zanzibar first
For example: Zanzibar → Serengeti → Ngorongoro → Kilimanjaro
You enter Zanzibar first, so you should arrange the ZIC inbound travel insurance. The current guidance allows the policy to apply within the United Republic of Tanzania, subject to its terms and conditions.
Important: Insurance and Visa Are Different
There is sometimes confusion between the inbound insurance and the Tanzania visa.
NIC and ZIC do not issue Tanzania visas.
Your Tanzania visa is a separate requirement and is handled through the official Tanzania Immigration visa system.
The official Tanzania eVisa platform allows visitors to apply for a visa for the United Republic of Tanzania, including Mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar. Travellers visiting both areas do not need a new visa simply because they travel from one to the other.

So, the simple way to remember it is:
Mainland Tanzania first → NIC insurance
Zanzibar first → ZIC insurance
Tanzania visa → Tanzania Immigration eVisa system
Do I Need to Buy It Before I Travel?
We recommend arranging the insurance before your trip rather than leaving it until arrival.
Having your insurance certificate ready can make your arrival process easier and gives you one less thing to arrange after a long international flight.
NIC advises visitors to obtain the required cover before arriving at the entry point and to keep proof of insurance available for verification.
