Zanzibar After the Safari: The Perfect Pairing

After several days of early starts, dusty game drives, and the constant adrenaline of wildlife sightings, your body needs a different kind of holiday. Zanzibar — a short flight from Arusha or Nairobi — was built for exactly this moment. White sand, turquoise water, fresh seafood, and the slow rhythm of Swahili island life.

The island has distinct personalities depending on where you stay. The north — Nungwi and Kendwa — has the best swimming beaches and the liveliest atmosphere, with restaurants, dive shops, and a steady stream of sundowners. The east coast — Paje, Jambiani, Matemwe — is wilder, with vast tidal flats, kite-surfing, and quieter, owner-run lodges. For the highest-end privacy, Mnemba Island, just off the north-east coast, is a private island reserve where suites open directly onto the beach and a marine conservancy protects the reef.

Allow at least four nights — three is too short to truly decompress, and five gives you a proper day of diving or dolphin-spotting on top of pure beach time. A morning spent wandering Stone Town’s labyrinth of carved doorways, spice markets, and Omani-era architecture is essential before you fly home; we recommend booking a guided cultural walk so the history comes alive.

Practical note: Zanzibar is part of Tanzania, so your Tanzania visa covers it. The best beach months are June to October and December to February. Avoid the long rains in April and May, when many smaller lodges close.
